Incoming Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney will takE office a few days early as Gov. Haley Barbour appointed him to replace longtime Commissioner George Dale, who resigned effective Dec. 31.

Chaney, elected commissioner in the November general election, will serve on an appointed basis from Jan. 1 until he is sworn in Jan. 10, 2008. He resigned his seat in the Mississippi Senate, effective Dec. 31.

In letters to the governor, Dale said he will resign effective at 5 p.m. Dec. 31, about 10 days early, and Chaney said he will resign his District 23 Senate seat effective the same day. Chaney will fill Dale’s unexpired term until he is sworn in to his own term as commissioner and state fire marshal.
