Debate: Campaign should be about public policy

By: Magnolia Tribune - October 8, 2007

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 10/8/7

Incumbent Republican Gov. Haley Barbour was right in Starkville on Thursday night when he said that the 2007 gubernatorial campaign should be “about public policy.”

But through two debates now, one in Biloxi and the second on the campus of Mississippi State University, the public debates between Barbour and Democratic challenger John Arthur Eaves Jr. have degenerated into predictable rhetoric about the relative dangers and merits of lobbyists or trial lawyers.

There has been the requisite pandering – one candidate to empty religious and moral appeals and the other to stirring up the political specters of national political figures who have little or nothing to do with who serves as Mississippi’s next governor.
