Renewed, organized citizen interest in highways pleases me. As chairman of the House Transportation Committee, in the words of Charles Dickens, I have seen the worst of times and some of the best of times.
I have proposed allowing MDOT to issue up to $100 million a year in bonds over the next five years. These bonds would be paid off from the fuel tax collected at the pump. This would almost double the amount of funds available for new construction. Presently MDOT can only let contracts when it has the money in the bank to pay for the project.
