Tax-free weekend coming up in Mississippi

This weekend, Mississippians can participate in back-to-school shopping tax-free.

Beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 31st and ending at midnight Saturday, August 1st shoppers can save on the seven percent state sales tax on certain items. This can also include items purchased online.

Goods purchased under $100 per item included in state tax-free include:

  • School supplies
  • School uniforms
  • Jeans and pants
  • Sweaters and shirts
  • Coats and jackets
  • Belts and hats
  • Socks and tennis shoes
  • Undergarments
  • Backpacks

Items such as jewelry, handbags, briefcases, wallets and watches are not included in the tax-free weekend.

This year protocol for shopping could look different for some counties across the state. If you are in one of the following counties it is mandated that you wear a mask while out.

Harrison, Jackson, Claiborne, Desoto, Grenada, Hinds, Jefferson, Madison, Quitman, Rankin, Sunflower, Washington, Wayne, Bolivar, Covington, Forrest, Humphreys, Panola, Sharkey, Simpson, Tallahatchie, Tate, and Walthall.

If you do choose to shop please remember to practice social distancing and if you have had symptoms of COVID-19 stay home.
