YP – U.S. Senate Judiciary sends Wilson’s 5th Circuit nomination to full Senate with confirmation likely
On a party-line vote of 12-10, the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary passed the nomination of Mississippi’s Cory Wilson for a seat on the United States Fifth Circuit out of committee.
The nomination will now be considered by the full Senate where confirmation appears likely as Republicans maintain the majority.
YP – Sen. Derrick Simmons offers resolution to change the design of the Mississippi State flag
Today in the Senate, Sen. Derrick Simmons (D) offered a resolution to suspend the rules in an attempt to provide legislation to change the design of the Mississippi state flag. The bill was co-authored by Democrat Senators Blount, Horhn, Norwood, Thomas, Jordan, Butler, Blount, Jackson 11th, Simmons 13th, Barnett and Jackson 32nd.
The act entitled “The Act to Amend Section 3-3-16 of the Mississippi Code of 1972, to change the design of the Official flag of the state of Mississippi, and for related purposes.”

Wanna change the flag? I’m with you on that. Have been for a long time. But here’s what I know for a fact – a majority of Mississippi voters and politicians aren’t there. Yet.
I think there are several issues regarding both strategy and tactics that folks, particularly Mississippians who aren’t Republicans, need to understand.
WDAM – Faith, education leaders speak up on calls for state flag change
Some of these voices were from leaders from different faith backgrounds lining the steps of St. Peter’s.
“Jesus said love God and love your neighbor,” explained Rev. Jason Coker, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Mississippi. “And I think we can do this if it’s an act of love to neighbor.”
“By not changing the flag, we’re saying to the world, nothing has changed,” said Bishop Ronnie Crudup, Diocese Bishop, Fellowship of International Churches.

YP – Speaker Pelosi calls for Mississippi’s Statuary Hall statues to be removed
The Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi (D), wrote a letter Wednesday to the Joint Committee on the Library requesting that 11 statues representing Confederate soldiers and officials be removed from the U.S. Capitol’s National Statuary Hall.
Of those 11, two are authorized to be in place on behalf of Mississippi. Those statues are of Jefferson Davis and James George. Davis was most notably president of the Confederacy but also a U.S. Senator and a U.S. Secretary of War, among other things. George was a Confederate colonel who became a U.S. Senator and later help craft the state’s 1890 constitution.

WLOX – MHP Col. Chris Gillard announces retirement after 26 years of service
Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) Colonel Chris Gillard announced Thursday that he will retire on June 30 after 26 years of service.
Gillard was appointed to serve as MHP Colonel in February 2016.
Prior to his appointment, he served as Director of the Driver Service Bureau, Director of Training, Executive Officer to the Commissioner of Public Safety, Governor’s Executive Protection Detail, Drug Trafficking Interdiction Officer, and Highway Safety Patrol Recruiter.
