Crimson Tide’s mettle forged in offseason

The Alabama football team that lost its first game of 2009, in the Sugar Bowl, did so for a number of reasons.
It never quite repaired its broken heart from the SEC Championship Game. It never quite kept up with Utah’s receivers.
And it never did overcome the rather large distraction of Andre Smith’s suspension.

The Alabama football team that will play its first game of the 2009 season tonight against Virginia Tech has had to go over more hurdles than Edwin Moses just to get here.
