Academic powers find success on football field
Brains and brawn.
What a unique combination. And one that has gained headlines midway through the college football season.
Vanderbilt, the mighty Southeastern Conference’s smallest school and its only private university, is best known for its academia over its football. The same can be said about Northwestern in the Big Ten and Wake Forest (along with Boston College and Duke) in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
But BC, Duke and Northwestern are a combined 13-1 after 13th-ranked Vanderbilt edged then-No. 13 Auburn 14-13 on Saturday. It was Vandy’s first win against Auburn in 53 years. The Commodores are 5-0 for the first time since 1943, 3-0 in the SEC for the first time since ’50 and on track for their first winning season since 1982.
