- November 11, 1918 is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.” President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11, 1919 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day to honor those who served in the military.
Each November, military veterans around the country are honored. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, the observance dates back to 1919, when World War I ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28. Fighting actually ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
For that reason, November 11, 1918 is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.” President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11, 1919 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day to honor those who served in the military.
Around Mississippi, there are several Veterans Day events.
In Vicksburg, the Marion Military Institute Band will visit the Vicksburg Military Park on Saturday, November 7, for a special Veterans Day concert honoring the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces.
The free concert, featuring a selection of patriotic and historical music, will begin at 1pm next to the Visitor Center. Songs featured will include The Battle Cry of Freedom, Battle Hymn of the Republic, Full Measure of Devotion, Tell My Father from The Civil War: An American Musical, Shenandoah, and an Armed Forces Medley.
The Marion Military Institute in Marion, Alabama, founded in 1842, has a long history of preparing students for future leadership and service. The band’s performance will allow visitors an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of American service members and recognize the dedication of those who have defended our nation throughout its history.
Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and enjoy this special tribute in the historic setting of the Vicksburg National Military Park. While the concert is free to attend, the park’s regular entry fee applies.
The concert will provide a meaningful opportunity to honor our veterans while celebrating the music and history that connect generations of Americans. For more information, contact Brenda Wilson.
