Rebels expect test from Vanderbilt’s Hawkins

Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt has challenged his team to be more physical.

Before Tuesday’s practice, as is common custom in a Nutt-run session, Ole Miss players rushed to midfield for a bull-in-the-ring, one-on-one scrimmage. The exercise is designed to fire up the team in advance of practice as well as give coaches a bit of insight into a given player’s toughness level.
So just how tough are the Rebels?
We’ll find out on Saturday, at least on the defensive end. Jared Hawkins will probably make sure of it.
“This is our test,” Ole Miss outside linebacker Ashlee Palmer said. “This is going to be the test to see how physical we can be and just prove to the world that there is an Ole Miss out here.”
Ole Miss (2-1 overall, 0-0 in the Southeastern Conference) opens league play Saturday night at 6 in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium against Vanderbilt (3-0, 1-0). The Commodores’ running game is more than just quarterback Chris Nickson, who has a team-high 268 yards on 49 carries.
