Bulldogs are glad to have Pegues back

As painful as Mississippi State’s unexpected season-opening 22-14 loss at Louisiana Tech was to any State player who saw action, it was even worse for senior free safety Derek Pegues.

Pegues sat out the opener, serving a one-game suspension for too many missed summer-school classes.
And what the Bulldog faithful feared — key mistakes in the kicking game where Pegues makes a difference as a returner, and lack of a defensive playmaker down the stretch — came true in the opener.
On Monday morning, when coach Sylvester Croom held a kicking game practice to clear up mistakes as MSU (0-1) started preparations for Saturday’s home opener against Southeastern Louisiana, he noticed an animated Pegues.
“He was a different guy; he was asserting himself,” Croom said.
