In SEC, recruiting means survival
Recruiting in the Southeastern Conference is serious business. Multimillion-dollar contracts are on the line. So are livelihoods.
Consider 2007. Three SEC programs finished with Top 10 recruiting classes, according to Rivals.com. Six ranked in the Top 25.
Southern talent beckons. It’s no longer a given to protect your backyard, not when other national programs are invading.
“To survive, you have to recruit and you have to recruit well,” said Jamie Newberg of Rivals. “It demands a great work ethic. And the guys who apply that to recruiting every day of the year are the ones who see the biggest payoff.”
The Birmingham News compiled a list of the league’s top recruiters based on a dozen interviews with current SEC coaches, former coaches, high school coaches and recruiting analysts. Coaches participating requested anonymity because of the competitive nature of recruiting.
