RELEASE
MSGOP MUNICIPAL CANDIDATE SPOTLIGHT
The Mississippi Republican Party has fielded candidates in more municipalities than ever before this election season, and we are proud to spotlight some of these rising stars leading up to Election Day.
###
Our first Republican municipal Candidate in the Spotlight this week is Kirkham Povall, Alderman for the City of Cleveland.
Mr. Povall graduated from Lexington High School in 1967 and attended the University of Mississippi where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and political science in 1971.
After graduation, Mr. Povall attended law school at the University of Mississippi and received his Juris Doctor degree. He moved his family to Cleveland soon there after and accepted employment at the law firm that was to become Jacobs, Eddins & Povall.
Following 6 months of National Guard duty in 1991 during Desert Storm — the first Iraq war — Mr. Povall opened his own firm, now Povall & Jeffreys, P.A.
Over the years Mr. Povall has served as a member of the Board of the Mississippi Bar Commission, a member of the Board of Trustees for the Mississippi Health Care Trust Fund, and as Chairman of the Mississippi Tort Claims Board.
In addition to his law practice, Mr. Povall served 27 years in the Mississippi National Guard and Army Reserve retiring as Colonel in the Judge Advocates Corp. He was commissioned July 29, 1971 and retired March 15, 1999. He is a graduate of the Command and General Staff School and is admitted to practice in the U.S. Army Court of Military Appeals. His military experience included serving as Commander, Company B, 467 En in Clarksdale, Staff Judge Advocate, 155th AR BDE, MSARNG in Tupelo, Mississippi, and Staff Judge Advocate, 4th In Div in Fort Hood, Texas, during Desert Shield/Desert Storm from December 7, 1990 to May 15, 1991. During his years of service he received a number of awards including: Army Meritorious Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal Army Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (5 awards), Armed Forces Reserve Medal (10 yr. device), National Defense Service Medal, Mississippi Commendation Medal, Mississippi Longevity Medal (2 Oak Leaf), and the Mississippi War Medal.
Mr. Povall’s community involvement includes membership in the Cleveland Rotary Club, past director of the Chamber of Commerce and the Industrial Development Foundation of Bolivar County, past president of the Cleveland United Way, and past director for the Bolivar County Community Action Program, Inc.
Mr. Povall is currently serving his second term as Alderman for the City of Cleveland.
“I ran as an Independent in my two previous elections and have worked very hard to work with all elected officials in our community and county, always keeping the best interest of the entire community in the forefront,” Mr. Povall said. “Since the party was focused on recruiting Republican municipal candidates for this election, it seemed the perfect time to run as the first Republican municipal candidate in the Delta.
“Our Board has maintained a good working relationship among its members and Cleveland has benefitted from our efforts. Going forward I will continue to deal with all issues in a positive manner and promote the best outcome for all the citizens of our community.”

Our second Republican municipal Candidate in the Spotlight this week is Emily Chancelor, a candidate for Alderman in Enterprise.
Ms. Chancelor holds an Associates Degree from East Central Community College, a Bachelor of Science Degree from Mississippi State University with certifications in K-12 Special Education, K-8 General Education, and 7-12 Social Studies, and a Masters Degree in Educational Administration from Mississippi State University. She has 13 years of teaching experience and is an educator in the Enterprise School District.
“There is an unbelievable amount of support and generosity that the people of Enterprise exhibit every day,” Ms. Chancelor said. “I chose to run for Alderman because I want to serve the community in any way I can. I have a vested interest in the community and I plan to raise my two children in Enterprise.”
Ms. Chancelor believes her passion for the people of Enterprise and her vision will help the community grow and thrive, building on past successes where able and setting a new course when necessary.
“Running for alderman is my way of connecting with the community,” Ms. Chancelor added. “I would like to see some new faces and some new energy ready to make beneficial changes. Over the years, our board members have done an outstanding job and I feel as if I owe it to them to carry on in helping make our town even better.”
Ms. Chancelor understands that conservative principles, when implemented even on the local level, can produce long term positive results. She is running as a Republican because, as she states, her beliefs “best align with the principles of the Republican Party.”
“Throughout history, the Republican Party has urged community involvement,” Ms. Chancelor said. “As the next Alderman, I believe that sense of community involvement and principled leadership will greatly benefit the people of Enterprise. I hope I am allowed the opportunity to serve my community and enact any changes that will yield positive results for our citizens.”
