Contract hearings assess ‘double-dipping’ from state retirees
During Tuesday’s working budget group session honing in on contractual services and consultants at the state’s 13 agencies, House Speaker Phillip Gunn and Lt. Gov Tate Reeves likened the practice of employees in Mississippi’s retirement system returning to work part-time at state agencies as effectively letting retirees have their (retirement) cake and eat it, too.
Gunn said he regularly gets complaints from constituents of state agencies that hire retirees back as contractors at higher rates.
“That’s the kind of thing that’s offensive to many taxpayers. We want to avoid that as much as possible,” said Gunn, R-Clinton.
