Local event recognizes initiative 58
The State flag of 1894 amendment or initiative 58 may be on the ballot come November 6, 2018. The measure is designed to amend the Mississippi constitution to recognize the current state flag which was adopted by the legislature of 1894 as the official flag of Mississippi.
“We’ve got our booth setup for initiative 58 to keep our state flag and to put our state flag that’s been here since 1894 or to put an amendment to the constitution that says this is officially our flag,” said Britt Gully, local musician.
Other Mississippi residents are simultaneously working to add two similar measures to the 2018 ballet. Initiative 54 and 56. However, there is another side which is collecting signatures for initiative 55 which was designed to remove the confederate symbol from the flag.
