Sen. Wicker highlights Mississippi Olympians in op-ed

By: Magnolia Tribune - August 10, 2016

ROGER WICKER: Olympic games feature state All-Stars

Four athletes competing in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, call our state home. Ten others have connections to Mississippi as alumni, students, or coaches at our universities. Over the next two weeks, we will be watching with pride as they go for gold.

These talented athletes are already part of a winning Olympic tradition, following the extraordinary performances by Mississippi athletes who competed in track and field events during the 2012 London Games. In those Games, Mississippians helped set new a new world record in the women’s 4×100-meter relay and a new U.S. record in the men’s 4×100-meter relay. Gulfport native Brittney Reese made history by winning the gold medal in long jump. She was the first American woman to do so in more than 20 years, since Jackie Joyner-Kersee won gold in Seoul in 1988.
