COCHRAN VOTES TO STOP TERRORISTS FROM PURCHASING FIREARMS
Senate Considers Responses to Terror Attack in Orlando, Fla.
U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) today released the following statement regarding his support for amendments to keep suspected terrorists from purchasing firearms:
“Congress can take responsible action to strengthen the enforcement and prosecution of our nation’s laws without infringing on the rights of law-abiding citizens. The amendments I supported would improve coordination among law enforcement, the Justice Department and the courts to stop terrorists from killing innocent American citizens.”
Cochran supported an amendment to improve the National Criminal Instant Background Check System (or NICS), by allowing the inclusion of information about terrorist links and mental competence. The Senator also voted in favor of an amendment authorizing certain actions national, state and local law enforcement agencies when a person suspected of terrorist activities attempts to purchase a firearm.
In addition, Cochran today opposed two Democrat-sponsored gun-control proposals. All four amendments failed to reach the 60-vote threshold necessary for adoption.
