Scheme to Take Education Funding Authority From Legislators Spells Trouble For Mississippi Taxpayers
For starters, approval of Initiative 42 would be a dream come true for trial lawyers, who would have a new tool with which to frivolously sue the state and line their own pockets at the expense of taxpayers and the state’s economic competitiveness. Proponents of Initiative 42 claim that it will lead to increased education funding. Putting aside the fact that state legislators just approved historically high levels of education funding, the language of the proposed amendment says nothing about the state’s education funding formula. Rather, the measure gives a single judge in one county the power to control billions of taxpayer-supplied education dollars for the whole state.
