Why the Cochran photo scandal won’t lose steam
First, here’s what Kevin Camp, the attorney for the blogger at the center of this scandal, told Geoff Pender yesterday.
“We’ll see what happens after the election,” Camp said. “If it goes one way, we’ll probably see this case lose a lot of steam.”
In other words, if U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran wins the election, then this case will slowly fade away. Most people believe charges will be reduced and penalties will be nothing more than proverbial slaps on the wrist.
Here’s the problem: If that happens, District Attorney Michael Guest’s career is all but done. He is in an area that is heavy with tea party supporters, and if he is seen as having been a part of some political conspiracy to defeat Chris McDaniel, then they will organize to beat him. And if Guest wanted to run statewide, it wouldn’t matter whether his opponent was a McDaniel supporter or not; they would drill him with it the entire time.
