Bryant eyes South Mississippi as medical ‘center for excellence’

Gov. Phil Bryant announced a plan here Friday for an expansion of health-care systems statewide that calls for recruiting 1,000 new doctors and bringing more medical-industry investment to South Mississippi — plans outlined in the report “Blueprint Mississippi.”

Bryant talked about expanding the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s School of Medicine, using $10 million in federal Community Development Block Grant money to beef up training operations there.

The governor wants to expand residency programs across the state. Mississippi is severely lacking in doctors, particularly in rural areas, and ranking near the bottom on many national health studies.
