Governor calls for state-financed expansion of University of Mississippi medical school

Gov. Phil Bryant on Friday called for a state-financed expansion of the University of Mississippi’s medical school as he and business leaders unveiled a plan to use health care expansion as an economic development and job creation tool.

“We need a new medical school,” Bryant said. “The one we have now was built in 1955 … and it doesn’t hold enough students and they’re turning students away.”

But Bryant reiterated his stance against Mississippi accepting billions of federal dollars through “Obamacare” to expand its Medicaid program to serve hundreds of thousands of Mississippians without health coverage. He said this is a rope-a-dope move by the federal government that would eventually shift costs back to the state and bust the budget. He said the private sector should fund and implement most of his plan for health care industry expansion.
