Leaders kill tax bill after debate
Jackson city officials will have to try again next legislative session if they still want to dissolve a commission charged with keeping tabs on how money is spent from a special sales tax hike.
While the city of Jackson can still hold a referendum on a 1-cent sales tax to address needed water and sewage repairs, any tax dollars collected and spent will still be subject to oversight and approval by a separate board.
House Bill 168, which would have removed that board, had been held on a motion to reconsider, allowing for more debate.
Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. was at the Capitol Tuesday in an apparent attempt to revive the bill. He later released a statement airing his disappointment over the “lost legislation.”
