Release: Palazzo Statement on August Unemployment Numbers

GULFPORT, MS – Congressman Steven Palazzo (R-MS), Assistant Republican Whip, issued the following statement today regarding the latest unemployment report released by the U.S. Department of Labor:

“Friday’s unemployment report is disturbing and upsetting at the very least. Not one single job was added to our economy this month.

“For the second month this year the unemployment rate has topped 9%. The unemployment rate has been at or above 8 percent for 31 months now, the longest consecutive streak since the Great Depression. The American people deserve better than this. The White House claimed that signing the stimulus into law would keep unemployment from rising above 6.5%.

“More stimulus spending is clearly not the way to add jobs to our struggling economy. We as a nation need to address the real problems of spending, taxation and regulation that are a hindrance to true economic recovery. The best way to do that is to continue to push for a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution. I hope that the Senate Democrats and Senate Majority Leader Reid will join me and my fellow Congressmen in doing so. The American people need a real solution and not more empty promises from Washington.”
