Leaders urge Wicker to support salt dome plan
Leaders in Perry County urged U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker to make a tough decision and support the use of river water to create oil reserves in the Richton salt dome.
But Wicker said though he believes in the jobs created and the economic development that would be brought in by the project, he could not support one end of the Pascagoula River over the other on this issue.
He said there are a number of people on the Coast opposed to taking water from the Pascagoula River to wash out caverns in the salt dome and returning the salty brine to the Gulf.
He suggested the people of Perry County work toward a consensus with the Coast.
“Make the vast majority of people in South Mississippi feel good about this project,” he said.
