The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal Editorial, 9/26/8
The national economic crisis exploded into Northeast Mississippi on Wednesday afternoon when the Republican presidential nominee, Sen. John McCain, said he would suspend his campaign today and asked for a delay in Friday night’s scheduled debate at the University of Mississippi against the Democratic nominee, Sen. Barack Obama.
McCain said he was returning to join the debate in the U.S. Senate, and asked that Obama also return, and that both meet with President Bush. Obama had earlier initiated a conversation with McCain that led to their issuing a joint statement of support for a meaningful congressional response to the crisis.
Obama said, correctly in our view, that he believes the debate should go forward because Americans need to hear from the candidates directly about the crisis and their proposals for it. It would also be beneficial – and hopefully reassuring – to the international audience as well.
The Commission on Presidential Debates, which indicated Wednesday it will hold the debate as scheduled, should allow a refocusing of the debate from foreign policy alone to become inclusive of discussions involving the economy because it is, in strategic terms, a matter of national security interests and international policy.
