Musgrove would take cut in pay

Musgrove earned nearly $300,000 last year from his law practice and from teaching and consulting jobs, according to financial disclosure records recently filed with the secretary of the Senate. Senators earn $169,300.

Musgrove, a Democrat, is running against GOP Sen. Roger Wicker, a former House member appointed by Gov. Haley Barbour to fill retired Sen. Trent Lott’s seat.

Since he was defeated for re-election by Barbour in 2003, Musgrove has worked as an attorney, professor and consultant.

He reported earning $200,000 last year from the Ridgeland law firm Copeland, Cook, Taylor, and Bush.

Musgrove also reported receiving $46,848 as a professor at the University of Mississippi, and $10,000 for teaching at the Mississippi College School of Law.

His company, Capitol Specialists, earned him $42,784 in consulting and speaking fees, the disclosure forms show.

Among his consulting firm’s clients is the Atlanta-based Lane Company, a development firm that is considering building condos, apartments and recreation complexes in Biloxi and Gulfport. The projects would complement the Gulf Coast gaming industry, said John Bell, the Lane Company’s southeast regional partner.

He said his company hired Musgrove “to provide us with direction at looking at some of these projects.”

Musgrove’s law firm clients include the Motex Corp., a Mississippi company that won a multi-million-dollar Federal Emergency Management Agency contract to maintain and service hurricane trailers.

Other clients include the National Wild Turkey Federation, the Maddox Foundation and Hernando-based Margaret Energy.
