Melton and Council Still at Odds over Summer Jobs

By: Magnolia Tribune - June 20, 2008

WLBT, 6/19/8

Jackson Mayor Frank Melton says his summer jobs program is back on track, though the city council would disagree.

The City of Ridgeland has paid Jackson $1.2 million in arrears for service from the O.B. Curtis Water Treatment Plant, and the mayor wants to use some of that cash to employ 300 teenagers.

The teen jobs will be city jobs only, nothing in the private sector. The jobs will pay $7 an hour. The Department of Public Works and Parks and Recreation have positions available. The teens will be drug tested beginning Monday, and they will work half-day shifts.

“Let’s say we have 100 openings in public works, which we probably do have,” Mayor Melton says. “I’ll be able to put 200 kids to work there because they’ll only be working half a day, so it will allow me to give an opportunity to 200 young men and women.”
