Can moderates win Democratic debate?

Mississippi’s Democratic Party is debating internally the message of the elections. The results offer something for those who think the party is on a steady downward slide, and for those who think it is holding its own.

On the downside, the Democrats, come January, will hold only one of eight statewide offices. Except for the attorney general’s race, where incumbent Democrat Jim Hood easily won re-election, the Republican candidate beat the Democrat by comfortable margins in contest after contest.

Next year, unless legal appeals succeed, Mississippians will be required to register by party, which will almost certainly speed up the white exodus to the Republican Party. …
