Jackson eyes state money to offset losses

The city of Jackson will again seek money from state lawmakers to offset revenue losses calculated at $14 million from having a large amount of untaxed property.

Council members also said during Monday’s Legislative Committee hearing that they’ll seek the state’s permission to increase from $20 to $50 the minimum cost of privilege licenses sold to businesses as a revenue generator.

The city has had money woes since early this year. The administration is seeking $2.9 million to cover a deficit created when Mayor Frank Melton did not enact a water and sewer rate increase included in the fiscal 2008 budget.
