Election is no guide in next year’s national race

Whatever we may think this general election says about the future of politics in Mississippi, it gives us no help at all in understanding what is going on in the rest of America.

Every national analysis and poll says there will be a Democratic presidential victory next year and an increase in Democratic majorities in both the House and Senate.

Democrats have a tendency to regard politics as a sport, as friendly competition by which you decide which side gets the jobs for a while and who runs the government. No matter which side wins, you’re happy to go out and have a beer with the opposition, like courthouse lawyers. For Republicans, politics is war.
