Reeves: State will get debt under control

By: Magnolia Tribune - September 26, 2007

The Hattiesburg American, 9/26/7

State Treasurer Tate Reeves on Tuesday touted his record for increasing state funds and decreasing state debt while in office.

In 1990, the state had $500 million in outstanding debt,” he told the Hattiesburg American Editorial Board. “When I was sworn in January 2004, it had grown to $3.191 billion.”

Reeves said from December 2003 to December 2006 the state’s general obligation debt was reduced to $3.182 million.

“In reality we have to pay our creditors first and fund other things second such as public education and public safety,” he said. “We are going to get control of this because we are not going to continue to mortgage our children’s future because we cannot balance our budget.”
