Voters in northeast Jackson will go to the polls today to choose a replacement for Ward 1 City Councilman Ben Allen.
Ward 1 voters need to choose a leader who will step into the void created by Allen’s resignation and contribute to consensus, not conflict, in the conduct of city business.
Ward 1 voters need to choose a leader who will support Mayor Melton when he’s right and oppose him when he’s wrong. A rubber stamp Council person is as worthless as one can constantly refuses to negotiate and find common ground.
Ward 1 voters need to choose a representative who understands that until Jackson has a sufficient number of police personnel on the streets, crime will never come under control. To attract those officers, the city must bring police pay into a competitive position.
