The program would provide people with free or low-cost inspections of homes or office buildings, a menu of items to be improved and the estimated costs. It would provide a corresponding calculation of insurance-premium reductions for the storm-proofing upgrades. The program would be modeled after the My Safe Florida Home program.
The Legislature, after killing the proposal a couple of times, eventually passed it, but provided no funding. Also, the original version written by Janus was watered down by the insurance-industry lobby. The premium discounts would not be mandatory for insurance companies, as Janus had originally proposed.
