Mississippi House District 88 Special Election moved to June

By: Frank Corder - April 2, 2020

Governor Tate Reeves announced today that the special election for Mississippi House District 88 is being rescheduled for June 23, 2020 as the state continues to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Ramona Blackledge resigned the seat at the end of January mere weeks into her first term over not being able to draw her PERS benefits while serving in the Legislature.

Consulting with state health officials and coordinating with Secretary of State Michael Watson and state election officials, Gov. Reeves determined the need to reschedule the special election.  It was originally set for April 21st.

“The health and well-being of all Mississippians must and always will be our top priority. We are closer to the beginning than the end of this outbreak, and conducting an election at this time would unnecessarily put our poll workers and voters at risk,” Gov. Reeves said.  “We must protect our rights as Americans to a free and fair election, but not at the expense of the health and safety of our people. Stay home, stay healthy.”

Three candidates have qualified in the special election: Jason Dykes, Robin Robinson, and Michael Walker.  Candidates in special elections do not run under a party label.

The Governor continues to monitor the elections calendar and consult with health officials as he looks at other upcoming elections in Mississippi while prioritizing the protection of public health.
