WTOK – Deadline week for absentee voting

If you live in Mississippi, this is the deadline week to vote absentee for the March 10th primary election.

The Circuit Clerk’s office will be open Saturday March 7th from 8am to noon. Make sure to check your calendars to make sure you are able to vote in person from 7am-7pm on Tuesday, March 10th.

Mississippi currently has a crime victims’ bill of rights in law, but a law can be changed. So, the attempt is to get it enshrined in the State Constitution…

…Rep. Fred Shanks says Marsy’s Law would inject the system with a needed support for victims.

“Currently an offender has several constitutional rights,” said Shanks. “A victim has none. So, what this will do is it will even the playing field. It will give the same amount of rights to a victim that an offender already has.”

WTVA – Analysis: Mississippi considers limit on drug called kratom

Mississippi legislators are debating whether to either regulate or ban kratom, an herbal drug that can be used for pain relief and that is currently unregulated in most parts of the United States.

Spectators packed a large room at the state Capitol on Thursday for a hearing about the drug.

On one side of the room sat physicians, Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics agents, recovering drug addicts and others who took turns telling lawmakers that kratom is harmful and should be illegal.

On the other side sat people wearing bright green stickers with the slogan: “Kratom saves lives.” They advocated keeping kratom legal but regulating it to ensure that it’s not mixed with controlled substances and that it’s not sold to minors.

NEWSMS – Presley supports FCC proposal to shorten suicide prevention hotline

A new phone number could help to make suicide prevention resources easier to access. 

The FCC is currently considering a proposal to shorten the national suicide prevention hotline from a full 10-digit phone number to a new three-digit phone number – 988. Mississippi’s Northern District Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley sent a letter in support of the change to FCC Chairman Ajit Pai. 

“Any actions we can take to improve access to suicide prevention and crisis intervention services will save lives and give hope to our communities affected by these crises,” Commissioner Presley said in the letter.
