Bill of the Day: Mississippi’s state book, the Holy Bible

By: Sarah Ulmer - February 27, 2020

We wouldn’t be in the Bible Belt without at least one bill to designate the Holy Bible as the state book of Mississippi.

Authored by Rep. Miles, the submission of HB 203, this is not the first time a piece of legislation like this has graced the Capitol. Over at least the last few years, there has been an attempt to make the Bible the state’s official book.

The bill reads:

The following shall be codified as Section 3-3-63, Mississippi Code of 1972: 3-3-63.  The Holy Bible is designated as the official state book of Mississippi. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.

The bill was referred to the Rules and Tourism Committee. It has just a few days to survive before the committee deadline.
