Gov. Phil Bryant appointed Mississippi Supreme Court Associate Justice Kenny Griffis to fill the District 1, Place 1 seat in December 2018 to replace retiring Chief Justice Bill Waller, Jr.
Today, Griffis announced on his Facebook page that he qualified to run for a full term in the 2020 cycle.
Griffis previously served as Chief Judge of the Mississippi Court of Appeals, and as a Presiding Judge. He was a member of the Court of Appeals for 16 years. He is a native of Meridian where he attended Meridian Community College and Mississippi State University – Meridian Branch. He went on to earn accounting and law degrees from the University of Mississippi. He was a Certified Public Accountant from 1984 through 2007.
Y’all Politics caught up with Justice Griffis at the ceremonial swearing in ceremony for incoming Republican Central District Public Service Commissioner Brent Bailey. Griffis swore in Bailey before a crowd of supporters at the Hilton in Jackson where Bailey thanked the Justice for his support and encouragement throughout the 2019 campaign.
Griffis serves as a member of the Mississippi Supreme Court’s Committee on Continuing Judicial Education. He has also served on the Supreme Court’s Advisory Committee on the Civil Rules, as Chair of the Bench Bar Committee of The Mississippi Bar, and the Committee on Electronic Filing and Case Management Systems.
