DAILY JOURNAL – Rep. Bennie Thompson’s black voter powerbase crucial for Senate Democrats
If Thompson’s aspirations are fulfilled this November, there will be a Mississippi African American holding electoral higher office than his.
For that to occur, Mike Espy, viewed by many as a Thompson rival, must win the special Senate election scheduled for November to replace veteran U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran, who stepped down in March because of poor health.
Thompson has endorsed both Espy and state Rep. David Baria of Bay St. Louis, the Mississippi House Democratic leader, who also is running in November in the regularly scheduled U.S. Senate election against incumbent Roger Wicker, a Tupelo Republican…
…Asked about his relationship with Mike Espy, Thompson said, “I am on record supporting him.”
Thompson’s endorsements have not always been easy to come by. Often, he stays out of the machinations of state elections. In 2008, when former Democratic Gov. Ronnie Musgrove was running in another Senate special election for a seat vacated by an early retirement by Trent Lott, Thompson published a sample ballot. The sample ballot marked all the Democratic candidates with the exception of the special senate election, which was left blank.

DAILY JOURNAL – Auditor’s report shows missing funds being repaid
The payments were detailed in an annual exceptions list, released recently by State Auditor Shad White. The annual report lists all instances of misappropriation of public funds over the last year, as well as efforts to collect money owed to the state and local governments…
…The auditor’s list also included all of the new charges and demands for repayment against public officials during fiscal year 2018.

Now, some 10,000 people in one city have been overcharged.
Leflore County Tax Assessor Leroy Ware says the wrong tax rate was applied for vehicle tags inside the city of Greenwood.
The Greenwood Commonwealth reports that the mistake for each tag might be roughly the cost of a gallon of gasoline, or less.
Leflore County has a slightly higher tax rate than the city of Greenwood. Ware says the state Department of Revenue applied the incorrect rate to vehicle tags inside the city, and sent that information to his office.

WJTV – $181K in rural grant monies awarded in 2nd Congressional District
U.S. Representative Bennie Thompson (D-MS) announced USDA rural development grants to the Board of Supervisors in Grenada and Tallahatchie County.
In Grenada County, supervisors will use the $85,000 to assist Provine Machine Works in expanding their production capacity. Thompson’s office says the investment will create five new part-time and five new full-time jobs.
In Tallahatchie County, Supervisors will use $96,000 to purchase new equipment for Greenleaf Farm & Landscape, LLC, which is a locally owned business in Enid to meet the new production capacity needed by its customers.

WLBT – UMMC, BCBS announces contract agreement
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi and the University of Mississippi Medical Center have reached an agreement, and all UMMC facilities are fully participating in network providers.
The parties thanked Mississippi Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney for his leadership in encouraging the parties to enter mediation.
Both Blue Cross and UMMC look forward to achieving their respective goals and serving Mississippians’ healthcare needs.
WLOX – MS Education Dept. now requires 7th graders to make 5 year career plan
Mississippi school kids will see new changes this year in the classroom. The MS Dept. of Education is changing the requirements for the 3rd grade literacy test and requiring 7th graders to complete a five-year career exploration plan…
…Another change this year is the five-year career exploration plan called the Individual Success Plan. Before the end of the school year, 7th graders must complete the plan with the help of teachers and school counselors.
