GEOFF PENDER: Bennett lottery proposal could quell arguments
But of note this session, House Gaming Committee Chairman Richard Bennett, R-Long Beach, has filed a lottery bill with a twist. His House Bill 910 would allow Mississippi to participate in multi-state lotteries — such as Powerball — with tickets sold only in state-licensed casinos. His proposal could appease opponents and weaken arguments that have kept lotteries out of Mississippi since the 1860s.
Now, a chairman and part of the GOP House leadership team filing such a bill might make one think it stands a decent chance of passage this year. Bennett said folks shouldn’t get their hopes up too high yet, and noted he’s likely to let his own bill die in the committee he chairs. But, he said, such a proposal could gain traction and pass within the next couple of years.
