HALL: Kelly all but certain to win #MS01, Tagert in for Northern Transportation race with Johnson

By: Magnolia Tribune - May 18, 2015

Sam Hall: MS01 had good storylines, but runoff won’t be one

Kelly is all but certain to be the next U.S. congressman from Mississippi’s first district….

…Northern District Transportation Commissioner Mike Tagert, an early favorite, came in third. He now faces re-election for his current office. The real story here, however, is that he faces what could be a serious challenger in Hernando Mayor Chip Johnson. It was originally thought that Johnson announced his bid for transportation commissioner as a placeholder should Tagert eventually run for and win the congressional race. Of course, Johnson said at the time of his qualifying for the state office that he was in the race regardless of what happened in the congressional race, but what was he supposed to say?…

…Tagert is well liked, well connected and well funded. However, he just faced a tough loss in the Congressional race, and Desoto County is more than in play with Johnson on the ballot. If Johnson runs hard, he could make a race of it.
