Yarber defeats Lumumba in runoff election for Jackson mayor
Tony Yarber defeated Chokwe Antar Lumumba in a runoff election to become Jackson’s new mayor, according to unofficial results.
Yarber, who could be sworn in as mayor as early as Wednesday, will finish the term of Mayor Chokwe Lumumba, who died Feb. 25. Election officials have to certify the results within three days.
“It’s a vote for experience. It’s a vote for unity. It’s a vote for a candidate who has the ability to bring all the people together. A vote for a candidate who has the ability to do this job tomorrow,” Yarber said.
Yarber said he plans to hit the ground running. One of the first things he plans to do is make a decision about the current department heads. He also wants to focus on the city’s infrastructure problems.
