McDaniel campaign highlights Cochran’s kind words about Obama

U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran has a few nicknames, chief among them being “Gentleman Thad.”

The reason is because, well, he’s got a reputation for being a gentleman. Of course, in today’s political climate, it’s that statesman’s attitude that can get politicians in trouble.

In the video above, which was shot in 2008, Cochran is talking to the editorial board of the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal and relating a story about how he shocked a crowd of students when he told them that he liked both Sen. John McCain and then-Sen. Barack Obama on a personal level. Cocrhan went on to explain that he would be voting for McCain and outlined the reasons as to why.

When asked by a member of the editorial board if he thought it would be a disaster for the country if Obama was elected, he responded:

Well, no, I just think he has the personal qualities to grow in the job even though he’s hadn’t had all the experiences that some others have. He has been in the United States Senate. He’s proven he gets along well with people. He’s very affable and charming, wonderful personality, very engaging personally, and diplomacy is a real important part of the job of the presidency, and I think he will do an excellent job in that respect.

This is the kind of campaigning that I personally can’t stand. Cochran said he was backing McCain, and he outlined all the reasons why. But because not only did he not launch into an attack against the opposing party’s candidate but dared to say something nice about the guy, “he’s out of touch with our conservative Mississippi values,” as state Sen. Chris McDaniel says in a press release highlighting the above video posted by National Review.
