House speaker wants to consider teacher pay raise in 2014

House Speaker Philip Gunn, R-Clinton, said Thursday he would like to consider a teacher pay raise in the 2014 session of the Mississippi Legislature.

Gunn said if revenue collections continue to be strong he would like to make raising state teacher pay an issue for the session, which starts in January. He said he would consider Gov. Phil Bryant’s proposal to make all teacher pay raises based on merit, but indicated that he believes there is a need for an across-the-board raise.

Mississippi teachers have not had a raise since 2007 and are routinely some of the lowest paid in the nation.
