Secretary Hosemann partners with City of Greenwood to sell dilapidated properties

By: Magnolia Tribune - August 27, 2013

Greenwood, Miss.—Making good on a pledge to get more dilapidated properties back to public use, Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann partnered with Greenwood Mayor Carolyn McAdams and Leflore County officials to announce the auction of sixty-two (62) parcels in the area, valued at over $195,000.

“The City of Greenwood is primed for economic growth and development,” says Secretary Hosemann. “Tax forfeited properties are a drain on the community, the State, and your local tax rolls. Putting these properties back into productive use will only enhance the community.”

Currently, the Secretary of State’s Office holds over $50-Million worth of property forfeited to the State for non-payment of ad valorem taxes. Over $578,000 of tax forfeited property is located in Leflore County.

“The City of Greenwood has been proactively working to clean up its dilapidated properties and is so appreciative of the positive response from Secretary Hosemann,” says Mayor McAdams. “He truly understands the struggles of municipalities and the importance of putting these properties back on the city’s tax roll. As mayor of Greenwood, I am grateful for his vision and leadership in this area.”

“We have been working with other cities to market the sale of our tax forfeited lands, which has become a growing program in our State,” adds Hosemann. “Our goal is to work with local governments, as we have in Greenwood, to determine which properties may be marketed for private ownership, and which properties may be transferred to local governments for public use.”
