Mississippi senators approve $15.3M Secretary of State budget for 2014 fiscal year
State senators reversed themselves Tuesday and approved Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann’s $15.3 million budget for the 2014 fiscal year that includes $395,000 for private lawyers to represent the state in any challenges to Mississippi’s voter ID law.
Republicans didn’t have enough of their members in the Senate chamber on Thursday to approve Hosemann’s spending request, and Democrat-led opponents blocked approval of the budget on a 23-17 vote, four shy of the constitutionally required majority of members in the Senate.
On Tuesday, senators had enough votes to turn back Democrats and approved the budget.
