Harper: Get serious about spending
U.S. Rep. Gregg Harper said he’s fought to reform entitlements and cut spending for years and the “fiscal cliff” bill Congress passed late on New Year’s accomplishes neither of those goals.
“For four years, I’ve fought to reform entitlements and cut spending,” said Harper, a Republican, in a Twitter post Tuesday night. “This bill accomplishes neither of these goals.”
“Unless the president gets serious about cutting spending, we’re going to have a tough time reversing the exploding debt,” Harper said Wednesday.
Past its own New Year’s deadline, a weary Congress sent President Barack Obama legislation to avoid a national “fiscal cliff” of middle class tax increases and spending cuts late Tuesday night in the culmination of a struggle that strained America’s divided government to the limit.
Mississippi Republican Reps. Alan Nunnelee and Steven Palazzo also voted against the House bill. Rep. Bennie Thompson, a Democrat, voted for the bill.
