Port approves West Pier layout, talks elevation and channel dredging
The state Port Commission unanimously approved a plan to provide space for a new tenant on 50 acres of an expanded West Pier, plus 23 acres for another tenant, which could be maritime-related or other commercial use, on the northeastern shore.
“I think it’s a terrific layout,” commission President Jim Simpson said during the port’s meeting Wednesday. “It positions us to go out there and find a new tenant.”
The port also took action on a connector road’s location, extended DuPont’s lease, talked about dredging of the ship channel and hired a compliance director. Simpson swore in the commission’s newest member, Harrison County appointee Bobby Knesal, an engineer, and acknowledged the resignation of Frances Turnage, the governor’s appointee who is moving and has already left the board.
