The new year will see three special state legislative elections to fill two vacancies caused by deaths of lawmakers and one by resignation, close on the heels of two in November in the first year of the legislative term.
Gov. Phil Bryant on Tuesday set a special election for Feb. 5 for the Senate District 28 seat representing Hinds County, left vacant by the death of Democratic Sen. Alice Harden. The qualifying deadline for candidates is Jan. 7, and a runoff, should it be required, would be Feb. 26.
A special election for House District 59, left vacant by the resignation of Republican Rep. Kevin McGee, who resigned over ethics violations, will be held on Jan. 8, the same day the 2013 legislative session starts. If required, a runoff will be held on Jan. 29.
