Mississippi Gov. Bryant bringing job-growth message to DeSoto

Bringing a pro-business message centered on job growth, Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant is scheduled as the keynote speaker at the DeSoto County Economic Development Council’s annual membership luncheon Dec. 12 at the Landers Center in Southaven.

Bryant, a Republican from the Jackson area, was elected governor in November 2011 after serving as state auditor and lieutenant governor. In the early 1990s, as a member of the state House of Representatives, he was vice chairman of the Insurance Committee and sponsored the Capital Gains Tax Cut Act of 1992.

As governor, he’s been critical of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, known as Obama Care, calling it an unwarranted expansion of Medicaid that Mississippi taxpayers can ill-afford.

Bryant says the “real solutions” to improving health care are assuming personal responsibility for health and making good lifestyle choices, such as exercise and a proper diet to shrink Mississippi’s obesity rate and accompanying diseases such as diabetes.
