Port chief: Announcement on Port of Gulfport expansion set for November

Port Commission President Lenny Sawyer told residents of North Gulfport on Tuesday night port officials expect to announce at a Nov. 15 meeting what direction the port’s expansion will take.

Sawyer said the governor would be at the meeting at the beachfront Marriott in Gulfport, but port spokesman Denton Gibbes later clarified Gov. Phil Bryant’s possible attendance is still being worked out.

Bryant has questioned whether the port needs to continue with plans to elevate the West Pier by 15 feet, to 25 feet above sea level, as part of its federally funded expansion and restoration project. For its $570 million, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development expects the port project to create 1,200 jobs, 51 percent of them for low- to moderate-income residents.
