Cancer awareness event provides opportunity to remember late friend, legislator Ezell Lee

Earline Cuave, Health Initiatives Representative of the Gulf Coast Office of the American Cancer Society, got choked up while talking about the late Sen. Ezell Lee during the inaugural Gulf Coast Research Day at Singing River Hospital last week in Pascagoula.

Lee, of Picayune, died in May at the age of 74 after battling cancer. Cuave, speaking about various ways to get involved and support cancer research through the society, displayed a “Light of Hope” luminary bag she plans to take to Washington, D.C., in February in memory of Lee — part of a “Light the Mall” event to remember those who have lost their battles with cancer. Cuave is a breast cancer survivor.

Lee served in the Mississippi House from 1988 to 1992, then in the Senate from 1992 until January 2012. He served most of his career as a Democrat, and switched to the Republican Party in February 2011. He was defeated in a Republican primary in August 2011 as he sought re-election in District 47, in parts of Pearl River, Stone, Harrison and Jackson counties.
